Read the Word:
Hebrews 9:11-14
Meditate on the Word:
A blood payment has always been the requirement for sin. It is a reminder of the seriousness of our sin and the holiness of God. The first sin, committed in the Garden of Eden, left Adam and Eve aware of their nakedness and they needed to be clothed. Imagine their horror when the animals were killed whose skins they were give to wear (Gen. 3:21). They had never seen anything die, but now they had caused it. Throughout the Old Testament, we see animals being sacrificed to pay for the sins of the people.
Hebrews reminds us that these animal sacrifices were not a complete sacrifice for the sin of humankind. After all, the very next sin a person would commit would require a fresh sacrifice. The point, again, is to realize the severity of our sin and the holiness of God. This is why the sacrifice of His Son on the cross is so important. As the only human to never commit a sin, He was eligible to effect for us the salvation that we need but cannot obtain outside of Him.
Pray the Word:
Thank the Lord for His sacrifice today.
