Read the Word:
1 Corinthians 2:1-11
Meditate on the Word:
We find ourselves, once again, in a place where a notable Christian personality faces allegations of sexual assault. While not a pastor this time, CCM artist Michael Tait has been wildly influential for decades singing with D. C. Talk, then with Newsboys. When these allegations come out, it is always heartbreaking for the victims and for those who were influenced by that notable personality. Whether a pastor or other leader, it becomes clear that these individuals were not living what they preached. But they had great and influential words.
Paul, writing to the church at Corinth, issues a great reminder that the message of Christ is not about persuasive words. It is about the power of Christ. People should be drawn in by the Holy Spirit, not by smooth words. This is not to say that preachers should not be eloquent, but that we must not rely on the smoothness of their words or the intelligence of their arguments. Instead, we must be drawn in and influenced by the Holy Spirit speaking to us through the words of scripture and of our preachers.
Pray the Word:
Pray for your preacher today, that God will protect him from relying on his own ability and smoothness of speech.
