Read the Word:
1 Samuel 18:6-17
Meditate on the Word:
This passage contains a phrase that can be difficult for us to accept. Verse 10 states, “The next day an evil spirit sent from God took control of Saul, and he began to rave inside the palace.” I don’t know about you, but I don’t like the idea of an evil spirit being sent from God. Yet, we know that God has authority over demons. After all, Jesus cast demons out of a man and into a herd of pigs. Perhaps this spirit was not as much sent as given permission, akin to Satan’s permission to bring about the torment that Job experienced. But Saul was occupying a position of authority that God had specifically removed from him. Saul lost the protection of the Holy Spirit when he was blatantly disobedient in a previous battle.
We endanger ourselves any time we enter into a place of disobedience. We remove God’s protection from us, and submit ourselves to control of evil spirits when we ignore His presence and act contrary to Him. When we allow jealousy and rage to control us, we endanger others as well. Let us take care to not let jealousy control us today.
Pray the Word:
Ask the Lord to point out any jealousy in your heart that you may repent of it.
