Read the Word:
Psalm 53:1-6
Meditate on the Word:
According to multiple sources, anxiety is increasing in the general population. Some sources have the rate of anxiety disorders at almost 20% of the population of adults and 31% of teens. These statistics seem to confirm what we have in recent years felt to be true: People are more worried now than ever. Yet few seem to recognize the connection between abandonment of God and increased anxiety. As people lean more away from God and more into self-serving sinful behavior, anxiety increases. To be clear, Christians can and do suffer from anxiety and it is a legitimate medical disorder. We are not talking about individual consequences for individual sins. We are talking about societal consequences for societal sins.
A great physical example of this is that many people suffer from cancers and other illnesses caused by polluted air, water, and soil. This pollution is not necessarily caused by those suffering, but they receive the lingering effects. In the same way, society suffers from a world that is corrupted by sin. We suffer from the presence of evil around us. We suffer even more when we invite evil into our lives. We suffer when we invite greed, violence, lust, and idolatry into our midst. We suffer as a society from the presence and consequences of sin. One of the mechanisms through which we as a society suffer is an increase in societal panic and anxiety. After all, if we reject the Prince of Peace, how can we receive His peace?
Pray the Word:
Pray that more people will turn from their sin and turn to Christ.
