Read the Word:
Psalm 18:1-6
Meditate on the Word:
The introduction to this psalm clearly states that “David, who spoke the words of this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.” David had been through a lot with Saul trying to kill him. Yet, God continually protected and delivered him from Saul’s evil plans. God had a plan for David’s life and was not going to let Saul derail that plan. For his part, David continued to rely solely on God for his deliverance. He even refused to take the opportunity to kill Saul when he had the chance (1 Samuel 24). The temptation to rely on his own ability to eliminate Saul had to have weighed on David. Yet, he trusted God and was rewarded for his trust.
Of course, Saul had David running for his life. Staying in one place and becoming an easy target for his enemy was not God’s plan. But David trusted God during his running and hiding. One can simultaneously trust God and run from evil. Or to put it anothe way, “live to fight another day.” It is easy to wonder why God allowed Saul to continue chasing David when He could have stopped him. Perhaps, however, David needed this time and the lessons that God’s faithfulness in these situations taught him for his next station in life. Maybe we do as well.
Pray the Word:
Thank God today for delivering you from the ultimate enemy.
