Read the Word:
Mark 14:43-52
Meditate on the Word:
Yesterday we looked at this passage and described the actions of the various disciples as the foe, the fighter, and the fleer. Often when we read this passage, we are drawn to Judas’ kiss of Jesus in betraying Him. In the West, one man walking up to another and kissing him would draw a lot of attention; in the East, not so much. A kiss on each cheek is a very common greeting among friends. All of the disciples had probably greeted Jesus in the same manner very often.
Judas’ sign was intended to seem normal and innocent. Of course, it was anything except innocent. Judas used the sign of affection and friendship to point out Jesus to His enemies. In doing this, Judas outed himself as the worst kind of enemy, the one who pretends to be a friend. This crime is not unique to Judas. For centuries, those within the church have betrayed Jesus in various ways while pretending to have great respect and affection for Him. Let this not be said of us.
Pray the Word:
Ask the Holy Spirit to point out the motives of your heart. Repent of any false motives today.
