Read the Word: Mark 11:15-19
Meditate on the Word:
In this passage, it is easy to focus on what Jesus did, and easy to gloss over what He said. We can be caught up in his seemingly uncharacteristic actions, such as the cursing of the fig tree and the cleansing of the temple. Of course, Jesus had the authority to do these things, but they still seem unexpected. Jesus’ teaching in the Temple begins with the familiar phrase, however, “Is it not written?” His appeal to what is written is reminiscent of His temptation in the wilderness (Matt. 4:4; 4:7; 4:10). He made frequent use of what the Holy Scriptures said. In this particular instance, He is alluding to what was said in Isaiah 56:7 and Jeremiah 7:11.
The Temple was supposed to be a place where people from around the world could come and pray in the presence of the living God. Instead of keeping it sanctified for its holy purpose, however, the ones in charge of it allowed it to become a place of commerce, taking advantage of those who attempted to get to know God there. Those in charge of the Temple had forgotten their purpose. While we no longer go to Temple to pray and worship, these activities are still expected of God’s people. We must prioritize these activities.
Pray the Word:
As you pray, take your time and focus your thoughts on God Himself, not simply on a list of things that you are bringing to Him. Pray to get to know Him more deeply.
