Read the Word:
Acts 6:1-7
Meditate on the Word:
This passage is often pointed to as the beginning of the office of deacon. There was a dispute in the church which had the potential to divide it. There was a complaint that some widows were not receiving their daily food. Whether this complaint was true or not is not addressed. What is addressed is that there is a need of help to solve the complaint and preserve the unity of the church. This is why the daily distribution was delegated. It needed to be done, and could not be done effectively by the Twelve.
Interestingly, no mention is made of these seven men’s skill or ability. What is required is that they be “of good reputation, full of the Spirit, and wisdom.” In other words, a true disciple with a good reputation. Paul would reinforce the character requirements for the office of elder and deacon in his letters. It is important that people serve in the church. It is more important that they have the proper character to serve. By selecting these men to serve, an important ministry thrived while the preaching ministry did not suffer. If everyone does their part, the Lord’s work c0ntinues in a mighty way.
Pray the Word:
Thank the Lord for those who serve in your church.
