Read the Word:
Ephesians 5:1-14
Meditate on the Word:
For a few years I worked in a hospital taking patients to and from their various tests in the building. It became a habit, when walking into a room, to use hand sanitizer quickly before putting on gloves to handle the patient. Several times, this hand sanitizer helped me to discover a cut or scrape on my hand that I had not observed or had forgotten about. If you’ve ever had alcohol on a cut, you know that it burns. That burning is from alcohol just being itself.
As imitators of Christ, we are called to be salt and light in the world. Salt, much like alcohol, stings when put on a cut. This stinging not only draws attention to the cut, but helps to cleanse it. In the same way, we, by being ourselves as God has called us to be, draw attention to the sins of others. We do not do this by accusing them; we do this by living in a way that is contradictory to them. The light in which we live shine on their darkness exposing their deeds. This does not make us superior. It makes us a reflection of God that can show others the way to Him. We cannot endorse or participate in evil, because it is against our new nature. We do not accuse, because we have also been guilty. We are simply pointing to the One who saved us.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to help you to walk in love, as the Messiah also loved us. (v. 2)
