Read the Word:
Galatians 5:16-26
Meditate on the Word:
I have rarely ever been able to keep any plant alive with one notable exception. I have a cactus that is several years old because, well, they thrive on neglect. It sits in my yard where it gets plenty of sunshine and all the rain the Lord sends. Other than that, it gets nothing from me except the occasional pulling of weeds from around it. In its pot, the conditions are right for this cactus to survive, and in a dry summer, maybe even thive. These conditions would not be suitable for, say, a hydrangea bush. I killed three last year, because I did not properly care for them.
What care do we take with the condition of our hearts? Do we feed and care for our soul? Do we provide a nourishing environment for the fruit of the spirit to grow? Or do we fill our heart with murder, greed, envy, lust, and the like. The things that grow in that environment are contrasted by the fruit of the spirit. Some of us are growing spiritual weeds, and even continuing to nurture them. If we fill our hearts and minds with junk, we choke out the spirit. If we nurture the spirit, we remove the weeds that would choke it out. Both cannot thrive in the same place.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to reveal to you any weeds that you need to pluck out, so that you may grow spiritual fruit.
