Read the Word:
Esther 7:1-10
Meditate on the Word:
Haman had planned evil for Esther’s cousin Mordecai. Mordecai would not bow down or pay homage to Haman. We are left to assume that this is because Jews are only to worship God, not man. Haman, in his newly-promoted position, was so completely enraged, that he decided to eliminate all the Jews. He also had a 75-foot tall gallows built at his house for the purpose of the very public display of Mordecai’s execution. Instead, because God intervened, this very public gallows was used for Haman’s own execution.
What if Haman had been satisfied with the great blessings in his life? He was in a very high position, second only to the king. The prestige and respect should have satisfied him, but he could only see the perceived disrespect of one man. Haman had riches and great power, but chose to use those for his own vengeful purposes. This was his downfall.
Are we able to enjoy the blessings we have been given, or do we focus on the one thing we do not have? Do we spend our time and energy on gratitude, or on desiring more? Do we allow a feeling of being deprived to lead us into evil thoughts and actions? Remember that God promises in James 4:10, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He wil exalt you.”
Pray the Word:
Confess any lack of gratitude in your life today. Repent.
