Read the Word: Psalm 119:33-40
Meditate on the Word:
Yesterday we were reminded that it takes God’s help for us to understand His word. We cannot understand Him, obey Him, and delight in Him without His help in understanding what He has said. Today, let’s turn our attention to verse 17, “Turn my eyes from looking at what is worthless; give me life in your ways.” Pay attention to the request and the result. Things that are worthless do not lead to us being given life. In fact, things that are worthless result in death.
When I was younger, it seemed readily apparent what I should avoid looking at. Avoid anything with nudity, profanity, and graphic violence. According to preachers, God was offended by these things. Of course, these things were easy to avoid, because you had to deliberately go to find them. It never occurred to me that worthless things were everywhere. There were many other worthless things that I spent a great deal of time looking at. Hours of television programming that were shaping my worldview away from Christ. Things that others had that I wanted. Friends who did not have my best interest at heart. These were all worthless things that I was focused on.
Now, we are surrounded by worthless things competing for our attention. They invade our homes in a plethora of streaming services. They clog up the six-inch screen we carry in our pockets. They distract us from the world around us. They also distract us from God Himself, who gives us life.
Pray the Word:
Ask the Lord to point out worthless things in your life and resolve to set them aside. Take some quiet time to see what He reveals to you.
