Read the Word:
Psalm 1:1-6
Meditate on the Word:
I can remember growing up, when print newspapers were still a thing, two advice columns that were widely published and well respected. Dear Abby and Ann Landers, were known for dispensing advice on a variety of topics to anonymous writers with a variety of questions. Now, people go online looking for advice for various situations they face. And a lot of it is not good. But truthfully, most people don’t want advice; they want someone to confirm the choice they’ve already made. This is why online forums such as Reddit’s “Am I the (Donkey)?” are so popular. People seek permission to act in whatever way they please, or to put it scripturally, to do “whatever is right in their own eyes” (Judges 17:6). The Internet has given average people access to a plethora of people who will affirm their ungodly desires.
The one whom God blesses, as pointed out by our psalmist today, does not walk in the advice of those who would tell him to do whatever he wants. He does not stand with them or sit and join with their sinful activities. Instead, he receives his advice and instruction from God’s word and those who hold faithfully to it. When we walk together with someone, it should be someone going the way we want to go. Those whose impulse is to do whatever sinful activity they desire in the moment are not the ones we should walk with. Instead, we must walk with Christ.
Pray the Word:
Thank the Lord that He “watches over the way of the righteous.”
