Read the Word: Psalm 103:8-11
Meditate on the Word:
What is the mental picture that you have when you think of God? This can be a hard one for many people. Scripture often refers to God as the Father. However, if your relationship with your earthly father was cold, or contentious, or even abusive, this can give you a skewed perspective on who our God is. It can be easy to feel like you must walk on eggshells around Him, or live in fear of offending Him. Some can picture God as uncaring or absent. Or that He is just waiting to punish you. If this is your vision of God, because of your experience with your father, I am sorry for you. Our earthly fathers were imperfect, while God is perfect.
While God does care greatly about justice, He is also merciful. He welcomes us to Him. He loves us and does not punish us as we deserve. The psalmist even reminds us here that His love knows no bounds. Can you picture this? The Creator of the universe loves you incredibly deeply. Even if nobody else has demonstrated that love to you. Even if your best earthly picture of His love is flawed. It is much easier to delight in God when we realize just how much He loves us.
Pray the Word:
Thank God for His great love for you today. Take some time to dwell on the fact that “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in faithful love.” This will help you to love Him.
