Read the Word:
Psalm 104:1-35
Meditate on the Word:
Our psalmist today does a great job of giving God credit for not only creating the world, but sustaining it. There was a once-popular academic belief known as deism which held basically that God created the world, but after creating it, just left it to its own devices. But our psalm today reminds us that God not only established the earth, but continues to cause the springs to flow, and causes grass and crops to grow. These are things that he does to care for his creatures. He provides trees for the birds to nest in. He provides food for his creatures as well as for us.
Why do we imagine that we have the power to destroy what God created? We do not really. This does not mean that humans are not awful stewards of the earth. We pollute the land, the water, and the air. Contemporary prophets of climate doom will argue that the things we do cause temperature shifts, increased storm activity, etc. What they always fail to recognize is God’s hand in this. He has not pulled his hand back and left us to our own devices. But He surely is not pleased with our treatment of His creation.
Pray the Word:
Thank God today for the wonderful world He gave us to inhabit.
