Read the Word:
Joshua 2:1-14
Meditate on the Word:
In response to the Lord’s command to prepare to take the land (Joshua 1:2), Joshua sent spies to Jericho to gather intelligence. Like spies in a box-office thriller, they get found out and are forced to rely on the kindness of a prostitute. She deceives her leaders and helps these Israelite spies to escape. Her reason: She knew that God was with them (Joshua 2:9-10). She wanted herself and her family saved.
We know that Joshua and the spies honored their word (Joshua 6:22-23). From this point, we could simply have deduced that Rahab lived happily ever after in Israel. We next read about her in Matthew 1:5 as one of the few women mentioned in the lineage of Jesus. Apparently, she had married a man named Salmon and gave birth to Boaz. Boaz is the kinsman redeemer who married Ruth and became the great-grandfather of King David. This former prostitute is mentioned with honor in the ancestry of the Messiah. She is also mentioned by James, “In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?” (James 2:25). Her former occupation is not her story. And the things that we formerly did do not have to be ours.
Pray the Word:
Thank God for His redemptive work in your life.
