Read the Word:
Psalm 107:17-22
Meditate on the Word:
There once was a woman who was sick for a very long time. Every time she went to the doctor, she would tell him what symptoms she was having and he would prescribe something new to take care of this particular set of symptoms. At one point, she was on nearly a dozen medications and was no better, still feeling just a general sense of being unwell. After the retirement of her doctor, she saw a new physician for the first time who asked her about her medications. She could not even tell the doctor what each medication was supposed to be fixing. So the new doctor, theorizing that maybe all her medications were interactly poorly with each other, took her off of everything. A month later, without the cocktail of medications in her system, the doctor was able to identify the one thing that was the problem and prescribe the right treatment.
So often, it is like that with our sin. We do not see our sin as the cause of our general sense of spiritual unwellness, so we add something to our lives to try to “fix” the problem that we cannot readily identify. For example, if we harbor unforgiveness toward someone, this can lead to feeling isolated. If our cure for isolation is ill-advised friendships, this can further isolate us from loved ones and from God. Then, if we seek to cure the problem with alcohol or drugs, we instead exacerbate the problem. This path leads to eventual death. If we call on God and allow Him to call our sin to mind and remove it, we can be restored. He is happy to do that for us.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to root out any sin in your life and draw closer to Him.
