Read the Word:
Exodus 6:1-13
Meditate on the Word:
Moses had a pair of unenviable tasks. Deliver a message of rescue to the Israelites (v. 6), and to command Pharaoh to let God’s people go (v. 10). Moses was already unpopular because his previous meeting with Pharaoh had caused the people to be treated poorly. He also, as is well known, had a communication problem, which was the reason that he needed Aaron. Neither audience wanted to listen to the message God had for them.
The people did not want to listen because of their pain. Pharaoh did not want to listen because of his pride. Both of these can hinder belief. When we do not see a way out of a situation and God seems to delay His answer, we can lose trust in Him. We can wonder why He would let us suffer. We can become angry with God and anyone who represents Him, like the Israelites did.
Pharaoh had the opposite problem. His life was good without listening to and obeying God. Why would he want to change? Good times can make it hard to trust God because we do not see the need for Him to provide. Pharaoh thought he was his own god. Many today share that same attitude. Whichever situation we are in, it is only in recognizing God’s sovereignty that we find comfort and peace in His promises.
Pray the Word:
Confess any obstacles to your trust of God today.
