Read the Word:
1 Samuel 20:1-25
Meditate on the Word:
Jonathan is about to find himself in a precarious position. He will be caught between his friend whom he loves and his father whom he also loves. He does not want to believe that his father has an evil intention against his friend, but he will soon find out that in fact, Saul does want David dead. What is interesting in this account is that David is humble enough to wonder if he actually did do something to warrant the king’s ire. David even expresses a willingness to die by Jonathan’s hand if he did offend the king. But we know that Saul’s problem with David was not his fault.
Many times, we can be tempted to play back events and conversations in our mind to see what we did wrong when someone is mad at us. And if we are at fault, we should be humble enough to apologize. But sometimes we are hated for reasons that are out of our control. David had not offended Saul; he had done what God strengthened him to do. Being close to Christ is sure to bring hatred from those who are controlled by evil spirits. As the world hates Him (note that I used present tense), it hates us. The light of His presence in us exposes their darkness. This is not our fault; it is simply spiritual reality.
Pray the Word:
Pray for anyone who is angry with you, seeking wisdom to handle the situation.
