Read the Word:
1 Samuel 18:1-5
Meditate on the Word:
Have you ever given much thought to Saul’s son Jonathan? Saul was the king, and Jonathan would, by custom of kings of the day, have been in line to take over his father’s throne. However, Jonathan was a witness to young David’s killing of Goliath. Upon seeing this, he knew that David had been called by God. Jonathan did not get jealous or feel threatened. Instead, he became the very best friend of young David. He gave David his own military garments. He would later go on to help David while Saul was trying to kill him. Jonathan’s great love and respect for David are legendary.
Jonathan could have been jealous. He could have hated David. He even could have helped his father Saul to kill David so that he could usurp the throne that God had anointed David for. Instead of caring about what he stood to lose, Jonathan chose to care about a friend who was obviously a true worshiper of God. The fact that these two both loved God so deeply led them to a deep friendship with each other that few people find today. It is easy to think that we would all like to have a friend like Jonathan. But are we willing to be a friend like Jonathan.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to give you true insight into your friendships.
