Read the Word:
Psalm 19:12-14
Meditate on the Word:
Jesus reminds us in Matthew 15:19, “For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, theefts, false testimonies, slander.” These are where our sins, but unintentional and intentional start. The psalmist rightly recognizes that our unintentional sins can be unknown to us. We may not perceive our thoughts, for example, as sinful until we feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit. They must be brought to our attention in order for us to properly repent of them.
This passage also reminds us that we need our Lord’s help to keep from willful sins. The draw of sin is very powerful, and we need help in order to resist it. Otherwise, we would all be perfect people free from sin, which we know we are not. We do not just need help with our actions; we need help to retrain our minds to do the will of our Creator. Only in this way can the “meditation of our heart” be acceptable to our God.
