Read the Word:
Acts 10:1-8
Meditate on the Word:
Cornelius had no reason to seek God. He had not been raised as a Jew or a Christian. Likely, as a Roman, he had at one point worshipped the plethora of gods that were popular in Rome. As a centurion, he was a man of authority and prestige. So why had he been “devout and God-fearing?” There was something about the God of Israel that had caused this centurion to start obeying what he knew about Him. This must also be the starting place for us.
God rewarded Cornelius’ obedience to Him by having him send for Peter to come and talk to his household. The next passage of the chapter shows Peter receiving a vision from the Lord at the same time that Cornelius’ messengers arrive. None of this is coincidental. God rewarded Cornelius’ obedience with the Holy Spirit. God rewarded Peter’s obedience by allowing him to bring the message to Cornelius’ household. This blessed encounter was a pivotal event in the early church.
God is not just for a certain type of people. He is not just for a certain race, color, creed, financial situation, or other external factor. He is for those who will obediently follow Him. Are we that type of people?
Pray the Word:
Commit anew to obeying the teachings of our Lord today.
