Read the Word:
Romans 4:1-8
Meditate on the Word:
Abraham demonstrated a lot of faith during his life. As an old man, he was told to gather up his wife and all his belongings, leave his homeland, and go to a land that God would give to his descendants. The problem: Abraham had no descendants at the time. Yet, he obeyed and went. The faith that it took to obey the Lord in this circumstance was “credited to him as righteousness.” God did not “owe” Abraham anything. He could have left him sitting in Ur childless for the rest of his life. He could have punished Abraham for disobedience. Instead, God blessed all the nations through his descendants.
A lot of people want to act like the Creator of the Universe owes them something. We would do well to remember our place. The fact that He continues to give us life and breath is a blessing which we do not deserve. God does not owe us health, wealth, family, friends, or any other of His blessings. He chooses to give them freely. As He has chosen freely to give us salvation through Christ. Our faith in Him is also credited to us as righteousness.
Pray the Word:
Repent of any attitude that implies that God owes you something. Express thanks to Him today.
