Read the Word:
Romans 13:11-14
Meditate on the Word:
In my lifetime, I have had two vastly different experiences with daybreak. The first, after spending a night staving off rest, either for work or for playing or partying all night, has been painful. The light hurts tired eyes. It shines a light on sinful deeds. It highlights fatigue, exhaustion, and rebellion. The second experience with daybreak, occurring after a night’s rest, is a welcome, beautiful sight. It is a fresh start to a day that one is ready for. It doesn’t hurt, because one is prepared for it.
As Apostle Paul points out in Romans, there are different expectations for how people walk, talk, and act in times of daylight. While the darkness can cover and even welcome evil deeds, daylight serves to make them much less acceptable. In scripture, we are commanded to be awake. Of course we are also commanded to rest at the appropriate time. The problem is when we do not keep either awakeness or rest in their proper time. When we fail to rest, the mental sluggishness invites us to times of poor judgment. When we fail to awaken at the appropriate time, we miss the beauty that the Lord has given for us to see. Let us relish the daylight together.
Pray the Word:
Give your plans over to the Lord so that he may direct your steps.
