Read the Word:
Hebrews 2:10-18
Meditate on the Word:
Have you ever, when going through a situation, been told, “I know what you’re going through.”? Has this ever been told to you by someone that you know has absolutely no idea what you’re actually going through? Sometimes when people want to be helpful, they can say the dumbest things. Of course, there is a model of healing where people are helped by people who actually have gone through what someone is currently going through. Alcoholics Anonymous has done this since 1935, and many other “twelve-step programs” have followed suit. Nobody can help you quite like someone who has already “been there, done that.”
We often speak of Christ’s atoning work on the cross. What we probably think and speak of less often is the 33 years that He lived without having ever sinned. During that time, He had the full range of human experience and emotion. He experienced the same temptations that we do today. He knows what it takes to overcome them. And He willingly does so. As the hymn goes, “Jesus knows all about our troubles; He will guide till the day is done. There’s not a friend like the lowly Jesus–No, not one! No, not one!” (Johnson Oatman, 1895). Let us rely on Jesus today.
Pray the Word:
Thank our Lord for His understanding and help today.
