Scripture: Mark 10:42-45
In a previous career, I once entered a diner frequented by truckers. As I sat down, the waitress yelled across the dining room at me, “What the heck (not her word) do you want?” After about a two-second stunned silence, I shouted back that I’d like a water. A quick observation of her behavior while she was carrying hot plates and beverages and taking orders revealed that (1) she alone was serving the dining room, (2) she was remarkably efficient, (3) her abrasive manner was her “schtick.” All the locals were used to it and enjoyed it. And she was very good at her job.
How often do we encounter service that is more like this server’s words than her actions? Someone who does not want to be there? Or does not want you to be there? Someone who is only there because they have to be? Are we tempted toward a bad attitude toward those we serve? What is our attitude toward our service?
We can learn from Jesus’ attitude about serving mankind by giving His life as the ransom for our sins. He did this deliberately and willingly. He set aside the things He is entitled to in order to meet a need that we had that we are unable to meet. Again, He did this deliberately and willingly. Do we serve the same way? When we help, is it with the right attitude? If not, we should examine ourselves to see why.
Prayer Prompt:
Pray that our Lord will bring to mind instances when your attitude toward others is not what it should be. Repent and do better.
