Scripture: Psalm 28:6-9
Blessed be the Lord,
for he has heard the sound of my pleading.
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;
my heart trusts in him, and I am helped.
Therefore my heart celebrates,
and I give thanks to him with my song.
8 The Lord is the strength of his people;
he is a stronghold of salvation for his anointed.
9 Save your people, bless your possession,
shepherd them, and carry them forever. — Psalms 28:6-9 (CSB)
Thoughts:
Sunday, we heard the pleading of Bartimaeus to Jesus to receive his sight. There are also many other instances in Scripture where someone pleads to God. God tells Moses from the burning bush that, “I have observed the misery of my people in Egypt, and have heard them crying out because of their oppressors” (Ex. 3:7). Hannah pleaded with the Lord for a child, and one was granted to her who became the prophet Samuel (1 Sam.). The list goes on. God hears His people, including David, the author of this psalm.
I think that it is easy to forget that God hears us, because we often do not hear Him. We fail to listen for His voice. In 1 Kings 19, we read of Elijah’s encounter with the Lord on the mountain. He was alone and discouraged. He went out to be in the Lord’s presence. He did not find the Lord in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. Instead, God was a soft voice, a whisper.
It is good to be persistent in calling out to God, but we must also not drown out His response to us. When we fill our days and nights with continuous noise, we do not hear His whisper. When we continue to talk over Him, we do not hear Him. And when we do not hear Him, it is likely to seem that He does not hear us.
Prayer Prompt:
When you go to pray, go to a very quiet place and do not fill the space with your words. Give the Lord a chance to speak to you.
