Reading: Matthew 20:20-28
In yesterday’s sermon, we covered Mark’s account of this event. Matthew’s account differs only slightly in that he credits James and John’s mother with making the request of Jesus. We should not see the two witnesses as conflicting, but instead, Matthew adding an additional detail: the presence (or prodding) of their mother. Jesus’ response in both accounts was not to the mother, but to the disciples. This becomes clear when the disciples themselves answer in verse 22.
It may seem laughable to us for these two adult men to take their mother with them to ask for the biggest of possible promotions. This was what they wanted: the second most powerful positions in the Kingdom. Then again, maybe not so strange. I have read several articles about young adults taking their parents with them to job interviews. It rarely seems to impress the interviewer.
Jesus pointedly asks James and John, “Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” The cup is best understood as the full measure of God’s wrath against sin. Certainly, these two men would go on to face persecution (and execution for James) for their following of Christ. But only Jesus could fulfill the requirement to pay for our sin. We should bear this in mind when we are tempted to think that we are more worthy than others. All of us are unable to pay the price to be redeemed from our own sin.
Prayer Prompt:
Thank Jesus for providing remission for your sins today. And seek His will on what your position in the Kingdom is.
