Reading: Acts 17:10-15
I became very familiar with this passage when I was younger because I attended a church called Berean Baptist Church. At a time when scripture was becoming less prominent in preaching, this church deliberately decided to hug more tightly to the word of God. The thing that is most notable about the Bereans is that they received the word with eagerness. This is the attitude with which they approached their study of the word.
What is the attitude with which we study the Word? I have seen people pull an obscure passage out of context in order to “prove” whatever point they were trying to make. I have seen people attempt to use scriptures in order to validate their chosen lifestyle. The Bereans, though, give us a great example. They heard the word preached, thought it was good news, and then checked it out to make sure that it matched what God had previously revealed. The right way to approach Scripture is to recognize that it is God’s word revealed to mankind. It is truthful and authoritative in all times and situations, including ours. And it is meant to change how we see God and ourselves.
Prayer Prompt:
Pray that God, through the Holy Spirit, will help you to understand His word today and correctly apply it to your life.
