Read the Word:
1 Samuel 24:1-22
Meditate on the Word:
I’m certain that David’s handling of this situation made no sense to the men that were with him. He had the chance to permanently end this threat on his life, but instead, simply showed Saul that he could have killed him. But David’s trust in God was much bigger than his fear for his life. David knew that he was to be king; he had been anointed as a boy. He also knew that God had put Saul into place as the current king, and to kill him would be to kill the man God had put in place at that time.
Knowing these things, David knew that Saul could not kill him and thwart God’s plan. David’s men saw killing Saul as a way to expedite God’s plan but David knew better. If he had killed Saul, then he would be no better than Saul. David’s life had been about learning to trust God in increasingly bad situations. Protecting sheep had taught him what he needed to know to slay a giant. Slaying a giant had given him confidence to lead Saul’s troops. David had confidence that the God who had brought him through all these things would continue to protect him. Do we trust in God’s protection?
Pray the Word:
Confess to the Lord any situation where you are tempted to shortcut His will.
