Read the Word:
Proverbs 7:1-4
Meditate on the Word:
Three things stand out in this passage that we should take note of: the mention of the pupil of the eye, the fingers, and the heart. These three parts of the body have the potential to do really good things or really awful things. These three members of our bodies are mentioned so that they may work together to protect us from sin.
The eye requires protection. People who work in industrial environments know this. But our eyes also require protection in our daily lives. As the children’s song goes, “Be careful little eyes what you see.” What we put in front of our eyes can either draw us closer to our Lord or distract us from Him and lead us away from Him. We must be careful to protect our eyes from indulgence in sin.
“Tie them to your fingers” is a great reminder that you should see God’s commands at work in what you do with your hands. His word is to be a reminder to use your hands for good, not for evil. Our actions must be ones that glorify God and exercise His wisdom.
“Write them on the tablet of your heart” is another way to say memorize them. The heart, as understood by the author, is the origin of our thoughts, both good and bad. We must filter the thoughts and desires of our heart through God’s commands in order to think the right thoughts and do the right things.
All these parts of the body work together to either lead us into sinful behavior or away from sinful behavior. Allow our Lord and His word to lead you today.
Pray the Word:
Ask our Lord to remind you of His word as you go throughout your day.
